Do You Need a Prescription for a Nebulizer?

Are you wondering if you need a prescription to purchase nebulizers and accessories? Why do you need a prescription? We are here to help provide information as to prescription requirements on nebulizers and why they are required.

These are the most common questions we get regarding nebulizers, compressors, and accessories.

Do you need a prescription for a nebulizer?

Yes, you do need a prescription from your primary care physician in order to buy nebulizers, compressors, and accessories. Federal law restricts these devices to sale by or on the order (prescription) of a physician.

Is there an alternative to nebulizers that does NOT require a prescription?

Yes, you can look into getting an atomizer. Please consult with your physician to see if an atomizer would work for your treatment.

Why do you need a prescription?

The FDA defines all nebulizers and MDIs as prescription devices. For more information please visit the Food and Drug Administration.

Can a Licensed Physician purchase a nebulizer?

Yes, as long as the physician has an active license then they can purchase nebulizers, compressors, and accessories directly.

How do I send my prescription?

This depends on where you purchase the device. At BV Medical you will be prompted before adding the product to your cart. You can either fill out our Letter of Medical Necessity, upload a photo of your prescription, or upload a file of your prescription. Some companies may ask you to email it or fax it. BV Medical gives you all these options to make it easier for you!

Please be aware if a company does not ask you for a prescription then they are not acting in accordance with federal law.

How can I purchase if I am Licensed Physician?

At BV Medical, we simply ask you for your first name, last name, license number, and state of the license. You will be prompted for this information before you add the item to your cart. This just allows us to verify your active physician license before purchase.

Please be aware if a company does not ask you for an active physician license then they are not acting in accordance with federal law.

Does insurance cover nebulizers?

It depends on your insurance company. If your insurance company does reimburse you for purchase of certain medical devices then please refer to your insurer for required documents and information. If you are purchasing a nebulizer and would like to use your insurance to pay for it then please make sure the place you are buying it from accepts insurance.

Are nebulizers covered by Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)?

Flexible Spending Accounts allow consumers to deduct pre-tax dollars from their paycheck in employer sponsored accounts to pay for medical expenses. It depends on your insurance company. If your insurance company does allow you to use FSA for purchase of certain medical devices then please refer to your insurer for required documents and information. If you are purchasing a nebulizer and would like to use your FSA to pay for it then please make sure the place you are buying it from accepts insurance.
