What is a Nebulizer?

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, a nebulizer is a device intended to spray liquids in aerosol form into gases that are delivered directly to the patient for breathing. Heated, ultrasonic, gas, venturi, and refillable nebulizers are included in this generic type of device. Please note federal law restricts nebulizers to sale by or on the order of a physician.

Portable Nebulizer

A portable nebulizer is designed for on-the-go use. This may be best for if you are traveling or in an environment where an electrical plug not be available. Most often, these devices may require batteries or recharging. 

Advantages
  • Portable for on-the-go use.
  • Cordless, so you do not have to be restricted to use the device within a certain area.
Disadvantages
  • Will require batteries or recharging.  
  • They are typically more expensive compared to tabletop nebulizers.

Tabletop Nebulizer

A tabletop nebulizer is designed for home use. Like the name states, it is set on a tabletop. This type of nebulizer most often requires you to plug it in into an electrical outlet via an AC adapter.

Advantages
  • Reliable power supply as long as there is an electrical outlet.
  • They are typically more cost-friendly compared to portable nebulizers.
Disadvantages
  • Requires you to use where an electrical outlet is available.
  • Restricts use to the length of the cord.
